Have you planned a holiday in Assisi with your children? Read our tips for a wonderful holiday in the company of your family.
If you have decided to spend a few days in Assisi with your family and children, we would like to inform you that there are many activities that both adults and children can enjoy.
People visiting Umbria are fascinated by its history, culture, good food and, last but not least, the surrounding nature. This is the reason why the region has been nicknamed “The Green Heart of Italy”. It is a region adored by adults and children, because there are many activities to enjoy that involve the entire family.
The city of Assisi embraces all of the qualities of Umbria: history, culture, excellent food and wine products, landscapes and amazing places to visit. The children will be delighted, and so will you!
What is there to see in particular in Assisi that will make your holiday with your children unforgettable? Here are some of the places and activities not to be missed during your visit to the city of Saint Francis.
IL BOSCO DI SAN FRANCESCO (ST. FRANCIS’ WOODLAND)
This woodland area measures 64 hectares and is a special place, which cannot fail to amaze you. Walk among the trees and cultivated fields, clearings and olive groves; it will be a way to relax and for your children to enjoy themselves as they run and play in complete freedom.
As you make your way through the woodland, you will come to the Church of Santa Croce, and also the remains of a hospital, a tower dating back to the 14th century and an ancient convent.
Finally, on reaching the top of the hill after a pleasant walk, it is possible to admire the “Terzo Paradiso” (Third Paradise) by Michelangelo Pistoletto, which represents the union between heaven and earth. It is made up from 121 olive trees arranged in a way to form an amazing composition of three circles. (source: FAI).
PLAY AREAS AND PARKS
Assisi has no shortage of green areas and places where children can play happily. One of these places is the small park in Santa Maria degli Angeli, at just a few kilometres from Assisi. This area is located in front of the majestic basilica. Many families gather here, especially when the weather is nice. Children can play safely in a pedestrian-only area. There are swings, see-saws and climbing frames. This is a great way to spend some time before or after visiting the amazing basilica.
VISITING THE CITY AND THE ROCCA (FORTRESS)
The city of St. Francis is a place of peace, in every sense. Assisi is a quiet place, pleasant even for children, who can walk freely in the several pedestrian areas.
There are many small shops to visit or places to stop and eat or drink something, while a visit to the Rocca maggiore (Fortress) is a must with children; it can be reached on foot or by car from the city centre. Obviously, the children will enjoy the walk and then visiting the Rocca itself. This is something not to be missed during your visit to the city of peace.
ASSISI ON HORSEBACK
A truly unforgettable experience for children is a horse ride at one of the riding schools in the area. When the weather is good, it is wonderful to ride a horse through the green Umbrian countryside, discovering the pathways of Francis. Instructors are available to help your children ride in complete safety.
Just choose from the riding schools and farm holiday complexes that offer this service; fun is guaranteed for the entire family.
As you have seen, there are many activities to enjoy with your children during your holiday in Assisi. You don’t even have to choose, just do whatever you want and have a great holiday.
