Furthermore, this is a perfect period for walks<\/strong> among the many monuments and archaeological sites from Roman times, which the Unesco site of Assisi<\/strong> offers its visitors.<\/p>\n

June is also the month of the Festa del Voto (Festival of the Vow) in Assisi, which celebrates the Saracens being expelled from the city by Saint Clare during the siege of the imperial troops of Vitale d\u2019Aversa in 1240.<\/p>\n

EXPULSION OF THE SARACENS FROM ASSISI<\/span><\/h3>\n

We are in 1239, a period distinguished by the bloody conflict between the Emperor Federico II of Swabia and Pope Gregory IX, which led to the excommunication of the German Emperor.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Emperor\u2019s furious reaction was not long in arriving and very quickly he invaded the Papal protectorate of the Duchy of Spoleto, of which Assisi was a part.<\/span><\/p>\n

Between 1240 and 1241 the troops of Federico II reached Assisi putting it under siege.<\/span><\/p>\n

Those in most danger were the sisters of the small convent of San Damiano (Saint Damian), which lies outside the city walls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Historiographic<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sources report how, thanks to the great faith that distinguished her, Saint Clare prevented the siege by convincing the troops to retreat.<\/span><\/p>\n

This event was represented in a decorative panel by the artist Guido a few years later. It depicts the saint, whose prayer managed to drive out the invaders from Assisi.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT TO SEE IN ASSISI IN JUNE<\/span><\/h3>\n

Since 1933, the\u00a0 Festa del Voto is celebrated in Assisi on 22 June. The entire city is involved on this day of commemoration, but especially to thank Saint Clare, the spiritual companion of Saint Francis of Assisi.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is an opportunity to closely experience the spirit of brotherhood and humanity that characterise the City of Peace, as well as share a unique experience with the local people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another event not to be missed is the historical re-enactment of 1800 called the Palio del Cupolone, which takes place from 8 to 17 June.<\/span><\/p>\n

With historical processions and re-enactments in period clothing, the event sees the Rione (urban districts) del Campo, the Rione del Ponte Rosso and the Rione Fornaci challenge each other for the Palio.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, Calendimaggio Open also returns in June, with mediaeval music from the ensembles formed by the two factions of Calendimaggio (Magnificent and Very Noble) and their relative choirs.<\/span><\/p>\n
